Honors College and Residences
February 17, 2015
As can be seen by the numerous orange cones and the massive hole in the ground, Purdue is once again under construction. This project, located on the southwest corner of 3rd and Russell Street, will be the site of two new Honors College buildings.
The construction of the Honors College and Residences project started on January 5th with the demolition of the Brownstone Apartments. In just over a year and a half, honors students will have access to everything these new buildings have to offer. Starting in the fall of 2016, all first-year honor students will move in to the upper levels of the buildings, which will consist of single, double, and triple residential rooms on co-ed floors. The two buildings, deemed the North building and the South building, will be connected through an underground hallway. The ground floor of both the North and South building will consist of a retail restaurant, a great hall, office space for honors faculty, classrooms, and a STEM and art lab. It is hoped that first-year honor seminar classes will be held in these new classrooms.
Honors College and Residences intern Alison Maslar-Donar has been a crucial piece of the construction puzzle. She is serving as the “go-between” person between the Honors College, Purdue’s housing and food services, the contractors, and students. On top of this, she is also blogging the entire construction process and updating the social media sites. She says she is eager for the buildings to be complete. Alison believes that living together in a community will result in a better college experience for honors students.
This new project encompasses what the Honors College is truly about – integrating academic and residential success. To keep up with the action, head to purduehonorscollegeresidences.wordpress.com to read Alison’s blog or follow @HC_Residences on Twitter.
